Solar panel removal and reinstall (for a new roof) in California
If your roof needs replacing or repair under an existing solar array, the panels and racking usually have to come off first and go back on afterwards (often called “detach and reset” or “R&R”). Below are the prices California contractors publish on their own websites, and 44 licensed contractors that state on their sites that they do this work.
What it costs: published prices
| Source | Published price |
|---|---|
| Forme Solar (Irvine)[1] | $350 per panel to remove and reinstall; “a typical job in our records is 16 panels” |
| Grandmark Roofing (Fresno)[2] | Standalone removal and reset: $250–$350 per panel; less when bundled with a roof replacement |
| Home Pro Roofing and Solar (Sunnyvale)[3][4] | About $250–$350 per panel on its removal page; $200–$300 per panel ($4,000–$7,500 for 20–25 panels) on its roof-replacement page. The company’s two pages differ. |
| California First Roofing (San Diego/LA)[5] | “Commonly $80–$175 per panel” for detach and reset, plus any electrical work required |
| EnergySage national benchmark, as cited by OC Solar[6] | $200–$300 per panel |
These are the companies’ own published figures, not quotes. Your price depends on panel count, roof type, and whether racking or flashing must be replaced. Get a written quote.
Before you hire
- Check that the contractor holds an active license at the CSLB[7]. Each listing below links to its CSLB record.
- Ask whether removal, storage, reinstall, and re-commissioning are all in the quote, and who warrants the roof penetrations afterwards.
- If your original installer is out of business, see what to do when your solar company went out of business.
